Alex Marie Brinkley – Top 10 Finalist in the Performing Songwriter Contest at the Wildflower! Arts & Music Festival

Started singing at 14, how old are you now?
“I just turned 19!”

When will you graduate from Berklee College of Music?
“I’m in the Class of 2019.”

What’s your favorite coffee to order?
“Soy lattes are definitely my favorite!”

Have a favorite quote or credo that you live by?
“Live más – Taco Bell. I also always have something sparkly on me at all times. Glitter is very important.”

Was the ukulele the first instrument you learned to play?
“Piano was actually my first instrument. I started learning piano when I was five because my mom played and I wanted to be just like her. When I was in my senior year of high school, there was a ukulele in one of the music rooms, I picked it up one day, and haven’t put it down since.”

How would you describe your songwriting style?
“My style is definitely pop/singer-songwriter. I always try to make my lyrics unique and the songs catchy. I listen to as much music as possible, so my songwriting influence honestly comes from almost every musical genre.”

How long did it take to write the song you submitted to Wildflower! and is it based on a real moment or memory?
“What If I Love You & Just Me were co-written in Nashville with one of my mentors, Doug Kahan. I came in both sessions with a first verse and chorus and we finished the songs from there. Both were written in under two hours, and yes, they’re based on true stories! “What If I Love You” was written about a guy that I was really good friends with in high school. I had always had a crush on him and he saw me as just a friend. In the song, I’m basically asking him, “Well, what if I love you?” “Just Me” is more of a song about myself and how my weird quirks and silly things I do make me who I am. Both songs are super fun for me to perform and I can’t wait to play them at Wildflower!”

Do you have any superstitious habits before a performance to chase jitters or just for plain old good luck?
“I usually eat a bean burrito a few hours in advance, drink a lot of water, wear a lot of glitter, and I never match my socks.”

What does it mean to be selected as a Top Ten Finalist for this competition?
“It means SO MUCH!!! I was almost in shock when I found out I was a finalist because everyone competing with me is so, so talented. I cannot wait to meet everyone and learn as much as I can from them. I’m honored to be a finalist.”

In a relationship or totally focused on career?
“I’m in a relationship with my ukuleles and Taco Bell.”

Will any special family members and friends be at Wildflower! cheering for you?
“My mom, stepdad, and some of my best friends will be there!”

Who in the Wildflower! line-up are you most excited to see perform?
“I’m really excited to see Survivor and Finger Eleven. I remember listening to both of them when I was younger, so I definitely want to go jam out to both of their performances.”
